MATHEMATICS – 1 period – 1 year

7th Grade Math
The 7th grade math course will focus on four critical areas:  (1) developing understanding of and applying proportional relationships; (2) developing understanding of operations with rational numbers and working with expressions and linear equations; (3) solving problems involving scale drawings and informal geometric constructions, and working with two-and three-dimensional shapes to solve problems involving area, surface area, and volume; and (4) drawing inferences about populations based on samples.  Concepts covered will include Ratios and Proportional Relationships, The Number System, Expressions and Equations, Geometry, Statistics and Probability.

7th Grade Honors Math

Some students are able to move quickly through mathematics so they may take advanced courses in high school.  The Honors Math course includes completing all of the 7th grade standards and half of the 8th grade standards during 7th grade.   There is a faster pace for instruction and learning.  Units include Rational Numbers and Exponents, Proportionality and Linear Relationships, Sampling Inference, Creating Comparing and Analyzing Geometric Figures.  This compacted course will prepare students for completion of Algebra 1 in 8th grade.  Math placement tests, previous grades, state test scores, and teacher recommendation are all reviewed for placement.  Summer homework will be required.
*Honors Math qualifies students to apply for the Pre AP/IB Honors Academy in the Fall.

8th Grade Math
The 8th grade math course will focus on three critical areas:  (1) formulating and reasoning about expressions and equations, including modeling an association in bivariate data with a linear equation, and solving linear equations and systems of linear equations; developing understanding of and applying proportional relationships; (2) grasping the concept of a function and using functions to describe quantitative relationships; (3) analyzing two and three dimensional space and figures using distance, angle, similarity, and congruence, and understanding and applying the Pythagorean Theorem.  Concepts covered include The Number System, Expressions and Equations, Functions, Geometry, Statistics and Probability. 8th grade math will place students in grade level Algebra 1 in the 9th grade.

8th Grade Honors Math

This course will cover linear equations and inequalities, systems of equations, linear & exponential functions, polynomials, factoring, and quadratic equations.  This compacted course moves quickly through 8th grade Comon Core Standards.  Students will complete Algebra 1 at the end of this course.  Math placement tests, previous grades, state test scores, and teacher recommendation are all reviewed for placement.  Summer homework will be required.
*Honors Math qualifies students to apply for the Pre AP/IB Honors Academy in the Fall.
